Meet the ESTRA Project Team

  • Professor Sylvane Desrivieres

I am Professor of Biological Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London, and my work focuses on the interplay between genetic, biopsychosocial and environmental factors in healthy development and in the development of eating disorders and comorbid mental illness. I am also Deputy Lead of the Eating Disorders and Obesity Theme at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre.

  • Professor Ulrike Schmidt

I am a Professor of Eating Disorders and Director of the Centre for Research on Eating and Weight Disorders at King’s College London. I am also a Consultant Psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. I lead the Eating Disorders and Obesity Theme in the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre.

  • Dr Zuo Zhang PhD

I joined King’s College London in 2018. I am a postdoctoral researcher and Medical Research Foundation Fellow at the SGDP Centre. My research aims to identify biomarkers of eating disorders, and to predict the disease risk by using machine learning methods.

  • Diego Rabelo Da Ponte

    Dr Diego Rabelo Da Ponte

I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Data analyst) at King’s College London, where I work with large data sets to understand the underlying mechanisms of mental disorders. I earned a Ph.D. in Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences in 2022. I received two scientific awards as a recognition of my research on mental health and big data. I have a deep appreciation for cutting-edge approaches applied to mental health, which is why I was visiting Ph.D. student (University of Central Lancashire - UK), investigating the role of muscle on neurodevelopmental disorder using multi-Omics data funded by the ERASMUS+. In 2022, I was nominated by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences as a young scientist in Artificial Intelligence.

  • Dr Lu Qi

I am a PhD Student at Kings College London working with ESTRA and IMAGEN cohorts. I am also a registered psychiatrist in China, specialising in eating disorders and sleep disorders.

  • Xingyang Yu

I joined King’s College London in October 2021 as a PhD student at the Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre. Prior to pursuing my PhD, I obtained my bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory technology and a double degree in psychology at Peking University. Following that, I received my master’s degree in basic psychology at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in China. My PhD project focuses on using longitudinal cohorts to investigate the neurobiological, genetic & epigenetic, and environmental risk factors associated with the development of eating disorders and other major mental disorders during adolescence. Furthermore, I’m also fascinated by the roles of epigenetic mechanisms in brain development throughout the lifespan and their impact on various cognitive and mental health outcomes.

  • Kofo Agunbiade

I joined the ESTRA team as a Research Assistant at the SGDP Centre in November 2021. I studied BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences at St George’s University London and undertook my MSc Translational Neuroscience at Imperial College London 2020.

  • Katie Glover

I am currently working as a Research Assistant with the ESTRA study at the Social, Genetic, Developmental and Psychology Centre (SGDP). I have an avid interest in Research, and this role is providing me with insight into the field, building my network base and developing many skills vital to my field. I am working towards my BSc in Psychology at Loughborough University and hope to pursue a Masters with Kings in the future.

  • Kim Gehrke

I am currently working on the ESTRA study at the SGDP. As a research assistant, I help to recruit participants and collect data. I am extremely interested in the neuroscience behind eating and addiction disorders, and hope to pursue this career path following my Psychology BSc at Loughborough University.

  • Andreia Tavares-Semedo

I am a current MSc Global Mental Health & Society student at the University of Edinburgh, and I have also completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Durham University. My interest in mental health, and especially eating disorder research and practice stems from both my personal experiences as well as my studies. My particular interest lies in the mental health of marginalised identities. I have been acting as a youth lived experience contributor to this ESTRA project, providing feedback to the rest of the team guided by my experience. Following the completion of my degree, I hope to remain in this field of study.

ESTRA STUDY ALUMINI

  • Dr Lauren Robinson

Lauren worked as a post-doctoral Researcher at Kings College London, specialising in Eating Disorders. She previously studied for a PhD in mental health at the Institute of Child Health at UCL. Her PhD project aimed to identify the role of Eating Disorders in pre-menopausal Osteoporosis, with particular emphasis on the incidence of bone fractures following an eating disorder diagnosis in adolescence. She is now a trainee Clinical Psychologist at the Oxford Institute of Clinical Psychology Training and Research.

  • Rebecca Adams

Rebecca joined the ESTRA team as a Research Assistant at the SGDP Centre in 2022 after working on IMAGEN in 2018 with Dr Lauren Robinson. She studied BSc (Hons) Psychology at King’s College London from 2016-2020. During her time with ESTRA, Rebecca helped to recruit participants and collect data for analyses. Rebecca is now working with the NHS and persuing her passion of helping those with mental health disorders.
